TITLE: Portrait of an elderly woman Evdocha. 1960s.
ARTIST: Zorya Halyna (1915-2002)
SIZE: 58x49cm/ '22,5x19,3 inches' (including frame)
TECHNIQUE: Oil on cardboard
Surprisingly expressive and brilliantly executed figurative portrait composition painted in oil on cardboard.
In the centre of the painting, an elderly woman in Ukrainian national costume sits in a courtyard against a background of bright green and flowers. A bright red scarf frames her weather-beaten face. Every crease and every line tells a story - of the years she has lived, the hardships she has endured, the joys and heartaches she has experienced. It was as if she paused for a moment and thought. She was busy with her work, but it was as if a thought had interrupted her. Her gaze is focussed on herself, as if she is lost in a distant memory. She radiates a calmness that is appealing.
The artist skilfully uses colour gradients as well as textured and expressive brushstrokes to emphasise the three-dimensionality of the scene and create a sense of depth that transports the viewer into a contemplative atmosphere.
The painting is housed in a very well-fitting frame.
The painting is in excellent condition.
